Requirements apply on designated highways starting October 1, with end dates of March 31 or April 30 depending on the route. For passenger vehicles, tires must have an M+S or mountain-snowflake marking and at least 3.5 mm of tread. Check the posted signs and B.C.'s route map before travelling.
It depends on where you drive and the conditions you're likely to encounter. Even if your usual route doesn't require winter tires, snow, ice and cold weather are worth planning for. If you're heading to Mount Washington or travelling beyond the Valley, check the requirements for your route.
Tell us where you drive during winter, and we'll help you compare suitable options.
Winter tires are designed for cold weather, snow and ice. All-weather tires carry the mountain-snowflake symbol for snow traction and are designed for year-round use. All-season tires suit milder conditions, but an M+S marking alone doesn't mean they have the same snow-traction certification.
The right choice depends on your usual routes and how much winter driving you do. We're happy to help you compare.
A common guideline is to switch when daily temperatures consistently fall below 7°C. If you'll be travelling on a designated winter-tire route, make sure your tires meet the requirements before your trip, starting October 1.

Different tires are designed for different conditions. If you use separate winter and summer or all-season sets, changing them with the seasons helps you get the performance they're designed to provide.
If you have all-weather tires, we can help you decide whether one set suits your driving throughout the year.
Yes, in many cases your winter tires can be fitted to your existing wheels, provided they're the right size and fit for your vehicle.
The tire is the rubber part that touches the road. The wheel is the metal part the tire mounts onto. The rim is the outer edge of the wheel, although people often use "rims" to mean the whole wheel.
Using the same wheels means removing one set of tires and mounting and balancing the other each season. With a separate set of wheels for your winter tires, the tires stay mounted and we swap the complete assemblies, making changeovers quicker and simpler.
